Spain: melon exports up 12%
The volume of Spanish melon exports increased by 12% in the first six months of 2008, according to the Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers/Exporters (FEPEX). These exports were worth a total of €133,8 M, 17% up on the same period of 2007.

UEFA and the World Heart Federation, with the support of the European Commission, came together at the British School of Brussels to launch the children’s cookery book, Eat for Goals! Through the book the message that a healthy lifestyle is also based on healthy food is conveyed by children’s role models, a multicultural group of 13 internationally renowned male and female football players, who share what they love to eat and give recipes for their favourite dishes.

ECPA calls for European Food Safety Authority Study
The European Crop Protection Association (ECPA) is calling for the European Parliament and Commission to request an independent, comprehensive impact assessment from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on Parliament's and Council's proposed pest management restriction criteria. The request was addressed to EU Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou in response to the release of what ECPA describes as a narrowly focussed and highly flawed report undertaken for the European Parliament's Environment Committee.

Europe: melon consumption overview
Recent studies on melon consumption in Europe conducted by leading company Syngenta conclude that Italy consumes more melons than any other European country - 456 tonnes a year, ahead of other important consumer markets included in the study, such as Spain, France and the United Kingdom.

International Trade Fair for Fruit and Vegetable Marketing in Asia

Global plant science industry highlights risks posed by postharvest losses
Croplife International, the global federation representing the plant science industry, today highlights the vast volume of crops that are lost to farmers and the food chain after they have been harvested, due to spoilage and poor storage facilities. On average, losses are between 10-20% of the actual crop harvested, although in Africa where small-scale farmers have to store crops such as maize for several months in order to provide food for their families, this can commonly be as high as 30-40%.
