Catalan chef Mireia Carbó left the hot stove in her restaurant for the Caprabo Social Club and the TV and radio studios. Trained at the Barcelona Hotel & Catering School, she is the author of 3 books: "La cuina que no amoïna" (2003), winner of the 2004 International Gourmand Award for the best cookbook with easy recipes, "La cuina et dóna joc" (2005) and "La cuina salvavides" (2007). As she says in the foreword to one of her books, “Life is complicated enough without making it even more complicated in the kitchen!”

Aurelio del Pino González, director general of the Association of Spanish Supermarket Chains (ACES), answers these and other questions, which are of vital importance to the farmer's success, from the germination of the first seeds through to satisfying the palate of the most demanding consumer.

Mediterranean workshop: “Recycling non-conventional water in protected cultivation”
From 28 April to 1 May, a Mediterranean workshop on new techniques for recycling non-conventional water in protected cultivation was organised by the Hassan II Agronomic and Veterinary Institute (IAV Hassan II) in collaboration with the European Union (EU). Professor Brahim Hafidi, the director of the IAV Hassan II talked to Melon Today about the use of non-conventional water in agriculture.

Mr. Nemesio Sánchez recently won the 4th World Pizza Championship for National Teams in Italy with a fruit and vegetable pizza. He tells us how it is possible to make a hale and hearty pizza with fresh products that is also tasty and enjoyable.

The project led by Rafael Lozano at the University of Almería has a clear objective: to improve the genetics of the melon. The priority is to achieve a product that is more competitive for the grower and tastier for the consumer. For almost 2 years the researchers have been busy diagnosing the resistance of the melon to several diseases and identifying various quality parameters, such as the sugar content and the antioxidants of the fruit. S&G Melon Today spoke to Mr. Lozano, who provides an insight into the nature of his work.

From its office in Europe, established in Auray, France, manager Beatrice Moreau and her team have helped more than 5,000 companies to export their products to the USA. Five years after the regulations came into effect (in December 2003), we asked Beatrice Moreau what the “Bioterrorism Act” actually entails for non-American exporters of fresh products.

Over the last few years, the consumption of ready-to-eat products has also shown an increase in Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany, as well as in the USA. To learn more about the rapidly growing market for fresh-cut products, S&G Peppers Today spoke to Mr. Graham Alexander, an expert on the fresh-cut industry who joined FTNON just over a year ago. He provides an overview of fruit and vegetable consumption trends in the fresh food sector and explains what the consumer values most.
